These are poisonous and must not be eaten:
1. Karaka - Corynocarpus laewgatus
the flesh of the berries was a great treat.
The most important thing for us to remember about this tree
is that the kernel in the berry (when fresh or raw) contains a
virulent alkaloid poison, which brings on convulsions of the
limbs which, if the patient does recover, are usually permanently
distorted.
2. Ngaio - Myoporum laetum
This tree, especially the fruit, is regarded as poisonous and
should not be eaten. It has other uses.
3. Piripiri, Hutiwai - Acaena sanguisorbae - Bidibid

4. Ponga - Cyathea dealbata - silver tree fern (woody fibre)
The woody fibre is considered poisonous. It was used
formerly as a part of the Maori spearhead
4. Poroporo - Solanum aviculare
(the unripe green berries have poisonous properties - nothing written in book about this plant which is also called NZ Nightshade.)
5. Rangiora, Pukapuka, Wharangi - Brachyglottis repanda
It is poisonous to stock, causing ”staggers”. Wild honey
found near this plant should not be gathered until all the flowers
have dropped; otherwise it is very poisonous.
6. Taraire - Beilschmiedia taraire
(nothing about this in book)
7. Titoki - Alectryon excelsus - New Zealand ash
The fruit is poisonous and should not be eaten.
8. Tutu, Tupakihi, Puhou - Coriaria arborea - Toot (seeds, stems and. leaves)
The seeds, stems and leaves of this tree, if eaten are extremely
poisonous. The poisonous principle is called tutin. It affects
the medulla oblongata and causes paralysis and death.
9. Urtica ferox - fierce nettle
(nothing in book about this but the look of it almost speaks for itself)
